Several new orders for the crane driver assistance system LaseLCPS at RTG, RMG and STS

LASE has received several orders for LaseLCPS systems (Load Collision Prevention System) to be equipped on RTG, RMG and also STS cranes in different ports worldwide. All systems, which have been ordered in the last months, are to be delivered both until the end of 2017 and after the turn of the year. Also the certified version LaseLCPS-3D-2D is set to provide more safety and efficiency in container handling.

LaseAYC - Automatic Yard Crane

The application LaseAYC - Automatic Yard Crane is built to ensure a fully automated container handling in ASC stacking yards and supports semi-automatic truck handling in transfer areas.

System features and benefits:

Short description:

The measurement system consists of two 3D laser scanners from the LASE 3000D-Series. Both 3D-Units are installed at a distance of approximately 2,9 metres on the trolley of an automatic stacking crane in order to measure containers, trailers or AGVs threedimensionally.
This measurement system for automated container handling and the operation in ASC yards can be divided into four functions. Firstly it recognises the top edges of the container in order to perform highly accurate pick-and-drop tasks for the landing of loaded or empty spreaders. Then it also detects misplaced containers within the clearance zone.
Furthermore it is able to detect the gap between two twentyfoot containers on terminal chassis before the pick-up operation. Recently the application LaseAYC undertakes a position verification after dropping a container in its cell.

LaseAVP - Automatic Vehicle Positioning

The LaseAVP -Automatic Positioning Vehicle- measurement system is designed for STS-Crane operations for an efficient workflow in container handling while loading and unloading operations of vessels.

Short description:

A 3D laser scanner from the LASE 3000D-C2-11x Series is mounted at the portal girder centrally above the lanes, whose projected scan plane detects AGVs in the chosen operation lane. When an AGV drives to the crane position the laser-based measurement system verifi es, if an AGV is present at this position or not.
In for example semi-automatic operations, an AGV receives a position where it has to drive to carry or fetch a container (or two 20ft containers in twin-mode operation). After arriving, the crane PLC triggers the LASE system to verify the exact position and to calculate the skew of a free slot or load on the AGV. For the further process of loading or unloading the system measures, if the AGV stands in a centric position under the crane trolley. The values for a centric position have a specifi c tolerance range and allow non-stop loading operations.

The application is able to position AGVs for all common container types, e.g. 20ft, 40ft and 45ft and is also applicable for twin-mode spreader operations under STS-Cranes.

New orders for LaseLCPS in Q4 for totally 63 cranes

LASE has received orders for totally 63 LaseLCPS (Load Collision Prevention System) to be equipped with RTG, RMG and STS cranes in seven different ports worldwide. All systems, which have been ordered in Q4 of 2016, are to be delivered and implemented until the end of 2017.

The LaseLCPS - Load Collision Prevention System is set to provide more safety and enhance productivity for every crane operation, whether it is being utilized on RTG, RMG or STS cranes.  The specific version LaseLCPS-3D-2D also has been qualified for Performance Level D - Cat. 3 by the German BG (Employers' Liability Insurance Association) recently. Performance Levels to EN ISO 13849-1 define the reliability how a control system complies with safety functions and how it is protected against malfunctions. By reaching one of the highest parameters within the qualification process, the application LaseLCPS-3D-2D confirms its high development status and meets current requirements on Performance Levels in the port industry.

The product LaseLCPS-3D-2D (Load Collision Prevention System -3D-2D) has been qualified for the Performance Level D - Category 3 by the German BG (Employers' Liability Insurance Association). The certification by this statutory institution sets a milestone in the product development and meets today’s requirements on Performance Levels for safety standards in the port industry.

The Performance Levels to EN ISO 13849-1 are parameters for the reliability how a control system complies with safety functions. By reaching one of the highest parameters, the application LaseLCPS-3D-2D confirms its high development status and also the acceptance on the market. In regards to safety it is important to run systems which have a reliable protection against malfunctions.

This specific version of the application LaseLCPS-3D-2D - Load Collision Prevention is a combined 3D/2D laser measurement system consisting of each one 2D- and one 3D- laser scanner mounted under the trolley. The LaseLCPS application software collects the scan data, does all needed calculations and sends the results to the machine PLC. In order to measure all relevant stacks a 3D profile scan in gantry and trolley direction will be processed before the first move. The scan planes of the 2D- and 3D laser scanner are projected orthogonally to each other.

Additionally the laser scanners scan over the yard during the movement in order to measure into shadow areas, which have been covered by higher stacks in front before. Within this collision prevention check a dynamic surveillance cube around the load proves an overlap with the container profiles in the yard. In the event of an overlap, the system retard the movement by slowing down the crane travel and even finally stops the container move.

On top of all, the system also has a soft-landing function for gentle container handling that leads to less spreader wear and a reduction of the operation noise.

Further order of Korean port for LaseTLP at eight RMG cranes

LASE received an order from another Korean port for the installation of LaseTLP (Truck Lifting Prevention) at in total eight RMG cranes.

One year before, together with the successful product release, a Korean port already has ordered this safety-related system for container operations in truck lanes. By the implementation of LaseTLP - Truck Lifting Prevention - hoist movements will be interrupted immediately when the laser measurement system detects a lifted container chassis at even 100 mm. It is not unusual that truck-trailers are lifted up by the crane hoist when one or more twistlocks are still locked or not completely loosened. In order to prevent such accidents this system detects the lifting of the trailer at the earliest stage. Such incidents of lifted container chassis or trucks are not harmless and can lead to severe injuries as well as huge damage claim costs.

The measurement system consists of one laser scanner from the LASE 2000D Series which is mounted at the crane gantry with a vertical scan plan towards the truck lane. The scanner tracks the objects (container and trailer) and compare the position of the lifted container and trailer structure. In case that both objects move upwards simultaneously due to one or more locked twistlocks, the system generates an alarm signal immediately. Thus the hoist movement stops before any damage or injury can occur. Either different existing container chassis types do not mean any problem for the LaseTLP application or changing environment conditions. Through the vertical orientation of the laser scanner a continuous system operation can be performed reliably. Further advantages of the system are its high sensitivity (reacts fast in case of lifting) and its elimination of false alarms - both make it to a reliable and highly accepted system by port operators. Less wear and the easy possibility of an adaption for retrofitting purposes are an additional plus.

The system complies with the requirements of cat. 3/PL d of EN ISO 13849-1. At the begin of 2017 LaseLCPS-3D-2D was issued an EC type-examination according to Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

This two-dimensional application LaseLCPS-2D - Load Collision Prevention System is a measurement system which works with two 2D laser scanners which are mounted under the trolley. The measurement system is applicable for topography detection and collision prevention at RTGs, RMGs or STS cranes.

Short description:

The application software collects the scan data, performs all needed calculations and sends the results to the PLC of the machine. For the collision prevention function the distance between the outer edges of the spreader/container combination and the outer edges of the containers in the stack (profile) will be calculated for each incoming scan. If the distance becomes too small, the LaseSCP application generates a warning message to the PLC. The topography of the stacks is also measured permanently. Due to these received topographical information time- and path- optimized driving cycles can be calculated for further crane movements.

LASE is now offering a brand new system for the intelligent prevention of truck lifting while crane hoist operation due to locked or defective twistlocks. This newly developed system is named LaseTLP – Truck Lifting Prevention and is a further expansion of LASE’s port automation solutions in order to ensure a high degree of safety in container handling. In this case hoist movements will be interrupted immediately when the laser measurement system detects a lifted container chassis at even 100 mm. The measurement system can be applied for RTG, RMG and ARMG cranes as well as for all truck-trailer chassis types.

Sometimes it might occur that truck-trailers are lifted up by the crane hoist when one or more twistlocks are still locked or not completely loosened. In order to prevent such accidents a system is required to detect the lifting of the trailer at the earliest stage. Such incidents of lifted container chassis or trucks are not harmless and can lead to severe injuries as well as huge damage claim costs. When assuming by the numbers of a terminal operator with 80 lift cases per year in his terminal it has lead to damage claim costs of approx. 200 Thousand Dollars by forwarding agents – thus this application pays off from the first day.

The measurement system consists of one or two laser scanners from the LASE 2000D Series which are mounted at the crane gantry with a vertical scan plan towards the truck lane. The scanner(s) track the objects (container and trailer) and compare the position of the lifted container and trailer structure. In case that both objects move upwards simultaneously due to one or more locked twistlocks, the system generates an alarm signal immediately. Thus the hoist movement stops before any damage or injury can occur. Either different existing container chassis types do not mean any problem for the Lase TLP application or changing environment conditions. Through the vertical orientation of the laser scanner(s) a continuous system operation even in downpour can be performed reliably. Further advantages of the system are its high sensitivity (reacts fast in case of lifting) and its elimination of false alarms - both make it to a reliable and highly accepted system by port operators. Less wear and the easy possibility of an adaption for retrofitting purposes are an additional plus.

The system is able to work under very harsh environmental conditions with a temperature range of -30° to +50° C and heavy rain and snow fall in order to ensure continuous operation. To keep the whole system as simple as possible only digital in- and outputs in standard configuration are being used. As an option a TCP/IP, Profibus or Modbus connection between the PLC and the LaseTLP system is possible as well.

General Manager Lars Ambrosy (LASE GmbH) is confident about entering the market at the right time with the increasing safety requirements and the degree of automation in ports worldwide. Lars Ambrosy says: “The increased need to prevent such unintentional truck lifting cases is based on the will of the port operators to have a continuous, safe, predictable and reliable operation. No acceptance for operation interruptions! . Thus the use of highly precise laser scanners and dedicated application software can help to prevent such incidents by detecting the maloperation before it cause damages”.
